MANDATE

Develop a complete promotional brand collateral for a live concert, based on an assigned musical composition. The outcome includes a printed poster, and a vinyl record packaging designed for their audience. The target audience is culturally aware and visually sophisticated, with an openness to experimental music and contemporary design practices

THE CONCEPT

Small World Project is a Montreal based ensemble founded by multi instrumentalist and composer Sebastien Dufour in 2008. Inspired by global musical traditions, the project was conceived as a platform for integrating diverse cultural rhythms into a contemporary musical framework. Dufour collaborated with percussionist Patrick Graham and bassist Frederic Samson, forming a trio grounded in rhythmic depth and cross cultural influences.

THE PROCESS

The creative process began with immersion in the music through active listening, workshops, and mark-making. An interview with Télé Québec revealed a defining insight: the group asks, “Does it sound bug-like enough?” after each composition. This inspired a visual language of intricacy and rhythm, expressed in the poster design. The typography uses generous kerning to emphasize precision, while the three cicada bugs represent the trio, centered and aligned to convey balance.

The record packaging extends this concept into a tactile, interactive experience. Contained in a plexiglass display case reminiscent of an entomology collection, the engraved song titles invite close observation. The case can be easily unscrewed to play the vinyl, and then be displayed or hung, transforming the packaging into a collector’s object that reflects the layered, detailed nature of Small World Project’s music.

A THOUGHTFUL DETAIL

Inspired by a display case for insects, the record packaging is engraved for tactility and detail, inviting close examination, a reference to their music. The packaging of facts as a collector’s item that can be displayed or hung. Inside, the vinyl is accompanied by Under the Lens, a booklet that observes each musical composition in detail, highlighting the patterns and rhythms in each song.

THE SOLUTION

The final promotional assets for Macroscope translate Small World Project’s rhythmic intricacy into an immersive visual language. Inspired by the group’s “bug-like” philosophy and the layered perspective of the album title, the designs emphasize detail, repetition, and movement across its formats. The engraved record sleeve and accompanying booklet extend the concept into a tactile, interactive experience, positioning the suite as a physical extension to the music itself.
